400 take part in charity walkathon TAMAN Jaya in Petaling Jaya came alive when more than 400 participants took part in the Kordel’s-Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM) charity walkathon in aid of the Arthritis Fund recently.

The fund was established to help poor patients seek arthritic-related treatments such as joint replacement therapy. Enthusiastic walkers, comprising the young and old, amateur and professionals, were flagged off by Arthritis Foundation Malaysia patron Toh Puan Datuk Seri Dr Aishah Ong and Cambert (M) Sdn Bhd director Dr Daniel Zuellig. The event started on a high note with the presence and support of orthopaedic surgeon Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, Malaysian’s first astronaut, who sportingly posed with his fans and admirers.

Winning team: Lo, Thevendran and Thirukumarann with their prizes. Other celebrities such as Farhan, Chermaine Poo, Jonathan Putra, Moe Nasrul and Keevan Raj were also there to rally for support. The first prize went to the team comprising B. Thirukumaran, G. Suresh, Lo Choon Seng, and R. Thevendra, who clocked in an impressive time of 1.12.53 to walk away with the grand prize of RM1,000. Consolation prizes comprising Kordel’s health products worth RM500 were also awarded to the subsequent top nine teams.

“In tough economic times, charitable organisations are usually the first to suffer, as people cut back on donations and other forms of contributions. “This has given us all the more reason to organise this joint charity walkathon to highlight the plight of arthritis sufferers. “With a small contribution, everyone has a chance to give back to society, learn about this debilitating chronic condition and enjoy a healthy happy time together,” said Kordel’s Business Unit manager Thomas Lim.

Official media partners from Health & Beauty and MIDI magazine also showed their support by sending their teams to take part. Co-sponsors of the event which included Nivea, Nuvafemme, Juvanex, Bio Oil, Green Magma, Nando’s, Sweet Sweat, Brut, Denim, Ribena and Horlicks gave support in the form of goodie bags worth up to RM100 for each participant.
